Siding, Roofing, Windows, and Decks for Ferndale Homes

Ferndale sits inland from the water but still lives inside the same weather system that shapes the rest of Whatcom County: damp winters, a long wet season, and enough moisture in the air most months that exterior materials never really get a break. Homes here don't need to sit right on the shoreline to feel the effects of salt-laden air and driving rain — those conditions travel with the wind well past the immediate coast, and Ferndale gets its share. Add in a moss season that can stretch across most of the calendar year, and you've got a climate that's genuinely hard on siding, roofing, and trim.

We're a local exterior contractor working throughout Whatcom County, including Ferndale, and we handle the full envelope of a home: siding, roofing, windows, and decks. Our approach is the same on every job — install materials that are actually engineered for this climate, and install them correctly, because in the Pacific Northwest a good product installed poorly fails just as fast as a weak product.

What This Climate Does to a Home Over Time

A few things tend to show up on Ferndale-area homes over the years, regardless of the exterior material:

  • Moss and algae growth on north-facing walls, roof valleys, and anywhere shade and moisture linger longest.
  • Paint and finish breakdown from repeated wet-dry cycling, especially on siding that wasn't factory-finished for this kind of exposure.
  • Trapped moisture behind siding and around windows when flashing, caulking, or panel gaps weren't detailed for constant rain rather than occasional storms.
  • Swelling, warping, or soft spots in wood-based products and composite trim that absorb moisture faster than they can dry out between rain events.
  • Salt-air corrosion on fasteners, flashing, and hardware that isn't rated for coastal-adjacent conditions.

None of this is unique to any one house — it's just what this part of Washington does to exterior materials over a couple of decades. The difference between a home that holds up and one that needs early repairs usually comes down to what was installed and how carefully it was flashed, fastened, and sealed.

Why We Only Install James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding

We made a decision a while back to stop installing several common siding products — vinyl, LP SmartSide, Cemplank, Allura, primed spruce, and cedar — and to standardize on James Hardie fiber cement instead. That wasn't a marketing decision; it was a practical one based on what actually performs in Whatcom County weather.

James Hardie siding is non-combustible fiber cement, which matters in a region where wildfire smoke and ember exposure have become a real consideration even west of the Cascades. It's manufactured with a factory-applied ColorPlus finish, which holds up far better against UV and moisture cycling than field-applied paint, and it comes in HZ product lines engineered specifically for wetter, more humid climates like ours. It also carries a strong transferable warranty, which matters if you ever sell the home — buyers and inspectors in this market are increasingly aware of siding history.

That doesn't mean every alternative product is a bad product in every application. Vinyl is inexpensive and low-maintenance in the right setting. Cedar has real aesthetic appeal. Wood-based composites have their place. But under sustained Whatcom County rain, moss pressure, and salt-influenced air, we've seen enough of the trade-offs — moisture sensitivity, finish maintenance, seam and joint vulnerability — that we no longer put those materials on homes we're responsible for. Fiber cement, installed correctly, is simply the more durable answer for this specific climate.

Roofing, Windows, and Decks Built for the Same Conditions

Siding doesn't work in isolation — the whole exterior envelope has to manage water together. Our roofing work focuses on proper underlayment, flashing at valleys and penetrations, and ventilation that lets a roof dry out between rain events instead of holding moisture. Window installations get sealed and flashed with the same wet-climate detailing, since a poorly flashed window is one of the most common sources of hidden water intrusion in older Ferndale homes. And for decks, we build with materials and fastening methods that account for standing moisture, moss growth on horizontal surfaces, and the freeze-thaw swings that occasionally show up even here.

Working with a Local Crew

A crew that works Whatcom County regularly knows what this weather does to a house, because we see it on every job, in every neighborhood, across every season. That familiarity shows up in the details that matter most on the exterior of a home — flashing sequences, panel gaps, fastener placement, and moisture management around windows and rooflines. It also means we're not guessing at what holds up here; we're building on what we've already watched succeed and fail on homes just like yours.

Comparing Common Siding Approaches in This Climate

ConsiderationTypical Trade-Off Locally
Moisture resistanceFiber cement resists swelling and rot better than wood-based composites in sustained rain
Finish durabilityFactory-applied finishes outlast field-applied paint under repeated wet-dry cycling
Fire resistanceNon-combustible fiber cement vs. combustible wood and some composite products
Long-term maintenanceLower repainting frequency reduces upkeep over a 20-30 year window
